Meta is preparing to open a new AI research lab that will focus on the development of “superintelligence,” an advanced artificial intelligence system that surpasses the capabilities of the human brain, according to a report in The New York Times published Tuesday. This initiative is part of Meta’s strategy to maintain its competitive edge in the accelerated technological race.
AI Startup CEO at the helm
Meta has appointed Alexandr Wang, 28, founder and CEO of Scale AI, a leading AI startup, to lead the new lab. Wang’s expertise in artificial intelligence is expected to play a key role in the development of this ambitious project. Additionally, Meta is negotiating a multi-billion-dollar investment in Scale AI, with plans to integrate Scale’s talent into its workforce as part of the deal.
Million-dollar salaries
To further its AI initiatives, Meta has reportedly offered lucrative compensation packages ranging from seven to nine figures to dozens of researchers at major AI companies, including OpenAI and Google. Many of these researchers have agreed to join the company, bringing their expertise to Meta’s new AI-focused initiative. Meta, which owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, among many other major platforms, has faced internal challenges in recent years, including management difficulties, staff turnover, and disappointing product launches. The new lab and reorganization are seen as efforts to revitalize its AI strategy and regain momentum in the competitive tech industry.
